Because Picking Up a New Hobby I Will Never Have Time For is *Just* What I Need!

(how’s that for a long title??)

(ps:  there’s a wee update at the bottom of the page)

I see so many of you fabulous bloggers writing about Digital Scrapbooking and posting some of your completed pages on your site.  It begged the question:  What the heck IS Digital Scrapbooking anyway?

Well, I suggest you go somewhere else (helpful aren’t I?) to learn all the ABC’s, but let me just tell you two things:

  1. it’s stupidly easy
  2. it’s crazy addictive

If you’d like to try it out, I *HIGHLY* suggest you visit the amazingly talented Shabby Princess for some unbelievable free downloads to get you started.  I know it sounds a shade creepy to say it, but I’d love to hug that woman and thank her for sharing her awe-inspiring talent.  Oh yeah, she’s good.

So…here’s a page I made recently.  It took me about 20 minutes.  No cutting, pasting, or spreading out all my supplies on the dining room table.  It was so easy, and I love how it looks!

In response to HolleeAnn’s question:  I didn’t mean to leave anyone high & dry!  I’m just not very well-versed at this yet myself, and there are a ton of great resources on the web.  The basics are this:  you download scrapbook elements (paper, alphabet, embellishments, etc) either for free or for purchase, you use an image editing program (I use Microsoft Picture It! because it’s super user-friendly) to put the elements and your photos together, and then you either print them yourself (IF you happen to have a special printer that can print the 12×12 pages) or you can use one of the many services online that will print your pages for you (and even bind them into a nice book).  There are tons of free downloads on the web for the design pieces, and even the ones for purchase are pretty reasonable.  A printer to buy would be a little exspendy, and the books produced by online vendors will run you a conservative $40 or so.  Still, given that I have umpteen billion pictures in digital format, I would have to pay for color ink and nice paper to print ALL of them out, then I’d have to spend the money on scrapbook supplies, then I’d have to spend my precious time and space putting it all together.  This digitial scrapbooking craze seems to be a perfect fit for busy moms!  Get surfing online and you’ll find a bunch of tutorials, resources, forums, etc to get you started.  :)

You are NOT lame! :) Look back at the post – I updated it to add what little I know about the whole process. I’m really just starting, but I’ve become very enthusiastic about it, given how totally simple it is. Enjoy! sn

Great post! I have an entire site and blog dedicated to digital and yes it is quite fun and a little addictive! Shabby Princess is a great place to start – I would highly recommend Digital Scrapbooking Magazine from CK Media. My site, http://www.digiscrap101.com has several video tutorials with how-to’s. In fact, if you email me I will set you up a user account! Have a nice weekend!

To answer the other commenter – the cool thing about digital – you can output one layout like a million different ways – well not really – but the possibilities are endless – digitally on TV screens, online forums, blogs, etc. You can also print the layouts and display in regular scrapbooks or even in digital photo frames – so many things you can do!

    Hope that helps!

Welcome to digital, isn’t it fabulous.
What I do w/my digital pages I print them then mount on 12×12 cardstock and put on an album or add more items to it such as ribbons etc..
Sometimes I just create a shutterfly book with them, the possibilities are unlimited.
There are tons of site with free kits to get you going.
