Daughters M11 and A9, and son I6 started swim lessons today! Living in Oregon, we didn’t have many opportunities to go swimming – first of all, no one had a pool!, and second of all, the local aquatic center was oftentimes, how shall I say, um…scary. And outside of our budget at the time.
Every neighborhood here in the Houston area has a pool, and a handful of friends have their own at home. I knew I’d feel better about this summer if my kids got some ACTUAL instruction in an ACTUAL pool before all the fun started. Thankfully, two local high schools offer summer swim lessons. One of the biggest selling points: INDOOR pool! Yeah!
Turns out that my three kids are the only three signed up for their time slot. They’ll go M-F for 40 minutes for the next three weeks. I like the consistency – I think it will give them more opportunities to practice and to retain what they’re learning. And since they’re the only three there, the instructor today was really able to personalize each of the tasks she gave to the kids. For daughter M11, she had her doing certain drills farther and more complicated than the other two. But then she spent some good time trying to teach my son to float. The kids are all different in their abilities.
Baby Eli was so good while we sat in the stands and watched. There was a swim team having practice at the same time (in the deep end of the pool), so I got to watch them, as well. It was a really enjoyable time, and I think the next three weeks will be a lot of fun. But with the big “plus” of an indoor pool comes just one little “minus” – every inch of me smells like pool chemicals! It just seeps into your clothes, skin, hair from sitting inside. Ah well, just a little price to pay, really, for fun and mommy security this hot, hot summer!
