For the first time in four summers, I am neither working nor pregnant. Yeah!
But with the current cost of living on the rise, money for travel is nonexistent. Boo!
Enter the new, hip idea of “staycations” – you know, making the most of what you have right where you are!
Because of his constant traveling for work, my husband has built up enough points for some free hotel rooms, so tonight we are driving 8.2 miles from home to enjoy someone else’s pool, cable, and housekeeping services. Not to mention the free, yummy breakfast in the morning.
Tomorrow we’re hitting the $1 movie and heading back to the hotel for some more swimming. Then my husband – my dear, sweet husband – will take the kids home and let me stay in my own hotel room, BY MYSELF, tomorrow night.
That last part came about because of an honest conversation we had recently. I told him that I didn’t ever envy the actual traveling he had to do for work (who loves to fly??), and I didn’t even envy all the meals and schmoozing he had to endure with clients. What I *do* envy is the time of day, some days as early as 4pm!, when he calls and says, “Well, I’m done for the day! I’m just gonna hang out in my hotel room and order room service.” To a mom at home with 5 kids, trying to take care of everything on her own, that would be a dream come true! He had to confess that it was pretty nice to have that time to himself, and it made him realize that it’s something I never get. So he booked the room for me and will be on his own – albeit for less than 20 hours – while I take a chance to watch tv, do some reading, genealogy, whatever! Oh, wait, not “whatever.” I’m going to sleep! Yeah, that’s it! S-L-E-E-P!!!!
I’m not sure what we’ll do with the rest of the week – my husband is off until Monday. He was thinking of taking the kids to an Astros game on Thursday, and then of course Friday is the 4th. We’ll be at a pancake breakfast at church that morning, and then perhaps dodging the barrage of neighborhood fireworks through midnight (people here are LOCO about fireworks!!).
It would be great to take a big summer trip, but it’s also pretty great to be just as happy to spend time at home with the family.
