I was a child in the fifties and this is what many people did and how they thought about a newborn with Down's syndrome or any other so-called disablility. The story rang true for me. It has been interesting to note how many times the book has come to mind since then however. I've read books that I enjoyed at the time and then decided that they did not hold up in my memory.
