We Are Genteel Society

Tonight, being Monday, was Family Home Evening in our house.  We didn’t have a set plan for tonight’s lessons and festivities, but our son I7 quickly came up with something.  Sitting quietly by himself in the den, he wrote out 6 index cards with a different set of scripture verses on each.  His choices, as he put it, just “came out of [his] mind.”  He gave each of us an index card, asked us to read the scripture to ourselves, and then write down how the scripture made us feel.  When we were all done, we shared the scriptures aloud and then shared our thoughts.

The crazy thing is, all the scriptures were related in some way.  I know it seems like you could blindly open the scriptures 2, 5, 10 times and keep hitting on the same theme, but that’s not entirely true.  Tonight, though, there was a running theme in the randomly chosen scriptures my son assigned us.  It was really cool, and as the discussion rolled on, we could feel the Spirit.

We concluded our evening with a prayer, and that’s when the silliness began.

During the prayer, daughter A10 prayed that everything would be alright with son I7.  Remember…the pea-sized metal ball he swallowed yesterday?  So this is how our conversation progressed after prayer:

I7:  Thanks, A.  I’m feelin’ pretty good, though.

Me:  Have you pooped today?

I7:  Yes, I did, but nothing came out.

ALL:  (laughing at his misstatement)

I7:  I mean…I mean…there was no silver ball.

M12:  What – did you poop air or something?

Husband:  Well, that’s called a fart!

ALL:  (laughing uncontrollably)

I can see we’re gonna get some mileage out of this conversation!  Especially since just a few minutes later, one of the kids tooted, and another kid yelled “YOU POOPED AIR!”  Oy.

Sounds like it turned out to be a great family night — Scripture, fart jokes, and laughter. What more could you want? :) (I say that in all seriousness. Our family is every bit as “genteel” as yours is, I promise you.)
