My Major Magazine Debut

An email I received today from a blogging friend:

Hey I saw you in this month’s Redbook! I was at the Y and got all excited. It’s a good thing I was on the elliptical. Other than the bike, it was probably the safest. Congrats.

Picture me checking the email address…reading the email again…and again.  Wondering “Is this a joke?  Did someone hack her email address?  Am I being punked?”

And then I remember, and I wonder how close I came to never knowing that something I did FOREVER ago would be printed.  Not that anyone at the magazine was going to bother ever telling me!

But there I am, in all my glory – right there, in the middle.  Enjoy!

    Wow! I thought I was the only one. I didn’t get my license until I was 18 and it took me 3 tests to pass. I was so scared I would mess up that ….I did! I’m not as bad any more, but there a few spots in Houston that give panic attacks. Those really high overpasses have me staring at the concrete immediately in front of my car repeating…don’t look to the side, don’t look to the side.

    i first found u from your wonderful article in REDBOOK i looked u up on myspace sent u a request.(please add me) im writing cause like u i have the same fear of driving its nice to no im not the only one with this problem. im 27 now this is something i have dealt with from when i got my license up until now im a mother of 4 boys and its hard i struggle with this every day with why cant i just suck it up and just drive where ever but the panic attacks/crying at just the thought of driving is to bad i do go a few places but other then that i im left to depend on my wonderful husband to take me were ever.anyway thanks to you for sharing your story i like to talk to u more if u would want.\

    Congrats on getting in to Redbook. :)

    I didn’t get my license until I was 17–and I only got it then because I had to. (I made an out-of-state move for school and had my first used car just days after getting my license. Which my mom kept reminding me I needed if I was going to actually DRIVE. Oh, Mom, why would I want to do that?)

    Driving wasn’t so bad where I first lived. The traffic wasn’t terrible and there was basically one major road that cut through town. As long as I didn’t have to deviate from that, I was OK. But other places I’ve lived since then? Not so much fun. Houston traffic is a nightmare (as you well know), and I’m too chicken to do much driving around here, especially since I was born without a sense of direction. Traffic + being directionally clueless = nervous wreck.

    Luckily, we have only one vehicle, so I let hubs do most of the driving.

    Anyway, here’s a friendly wave from across town, from another driving phobic. :) At least I know now that I’m in good company.
