In my church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - children are baptized at 8 years old. The later date means they’ve had a chance for some religious instruction before they make the conscious decision about this important spiritual commitment.
My older son, Isaac, turned 8 years old on Thursday, and this morning he was able to be baptized by my husband.
We had a small gathering of special friends and family, and the entire program was wonderful. I am so grateful that two of our daughters were old enough to participate – my 12yo gave the opening prayer, and my 15yo gave a beautiful talk on the covenants and blessings of baptism (oh, she made me cry – it was so fabulous!). After Isaac was baptized, Isaac’s young preschool friend spontaneously cheered, “Isaac did it!” (so, so sweet!) After getting dried off and dressed, my husband gave him a blessing and confirmed as a member of our church. My father-in-law then gave a talk on the purpose and nature of the Holy Ghost – how it can be a constant companion to us, revealing truth and giving comfort. Then after a welcome from our children’s Primary organization and the Bishop of our ward, we were done!
Some of our friends were able to come over for a big lunch afterwards, and it was so nice to continue the feeling of love and support for our family. The whole morning was just filled with a warm and happy spirit. We were able to present Isaac with his own set of scriptures (with his full name embossed on the cover), a small hymn book and children’s songbook (thank you Grammie and Papa C!), and a really cool bag to carry all of it to church (thanks Grandma and Grandpa!).
Thank you to everyone who made this day so special for our family. I’m proud of Isaac for making this decision, and feel so grateful to have his loving and enthusiastic spirit in my family.
