Children’s Music Review: B is for Bob

My kids often listen to music as they go to bed, and in the past I’ve been pleased and amused by some of their picks for nighttime serenades; some favorites have included Norah Jones, YoYo Ma, and Beethoven. When I was approached with the opportunity to review the new children’s CD, B is for Bob, I thought perhaps we’d find another CD with the right kind of groove for easing off into dreamland.

Bob_CDCoverThe “Bob” in B is for Bob is Bob Marley, and with this CD, his oldest son Ziggy Marley has reimagined many of his father’s legendary hits by remixing instrumentals and creating a new listening experience for the little ones. Four songs – “Could You Be Loved,” “One Love/People Get Ready,” “Lively Up Yourself,” and “Wake Up and Live – Pt 1″ – remain untouched and as they were when Bob Marley recorded them.

The result is a CD that indeed contains a cool kind of groove, and perhaps some instruments and vocal stylings that will be new to your child.  I found that some of the political/social material of Marley’s lyrics were too complex for my children to understand, but the overall message of love and acceptance is a positive one.  We listened to this in the car, but honestly, it had more of a relaxing “background” feel to it, and will definitely work as music for bedtime.

I’m not able to embed this video into this blog post, but to watch a really cool video of Ziggy Marley talking about the release of B is for Bob, VISIT THIS LINK.

The album also includes fun extras — The CD unlocks bonus online digital content including coloring book pages and a sing-a-long music video plus for Mom there’s a FREE one-year subscription to Parents magazine inside.

Believe it or not, my son listens to ‘The Final Countdown’ on a loop as he goes to sleep. It’s been one of his favorite songs for nearly two years. Either that, or Queen’s Greatest Hits. LOL! In any event, I think we need some new music. ;-)

Right now my daughter is enjoying listening to 100 bible songs I got from reviewing the book/cd. She really likes listening to a generic preschool cd typically though. My son doesnt listen to any at bedtime.

I really wish I could say that it’s something relaxing and soothing, but my older son listens to techno/dance tunes. I like that music occasionally, too, but it’s not my choice for bedtime. It works, though, so that’s what’s most important, I guess! My younger son doesn’t listen to anything yet, but he does enjoy the dance stuff when it’s played during the day.

My daughter is the only one that listens right now. My youngest would like to listen, but he shares a room with a sibling that like silence, so we have to take turns. My girl’s taste varies. One night it is Hannah Montana and the next it might be Joseph:A Nashville Tribute.

Devin is so into music right now. He always asks for Kidz Bop when we are in the car. I think he’d really like B is for Bob also.

Bob Marley is a staple in our house. My 22-month-old daughter is just now really getting into music. Her iPod in her room has a mixture of all kinds of pop music, but I also made sure to include a playlist of songs from my favorite musicals. Can’t beat the music from Oklahoma, The Music Man, Funny Girl, etc.!

The older one choose High School Musical or Hannah Montana. We play Clair De Lune for the baby.

As babies/toddlers, one of the lullabies I would sing to my kids was “Sunshine on My Shoulders . . . ” by John Denver. As my children aged, we began listening to his entire Greatest Hits album. The kids eventually began requesting to listen to the album as they went to sleep. Now, they may fall asleep to “Thank God I’m a Country Boy!” one night and “I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane” or “Rocky Mountain High” may do the trick the following evening. However, their all time favorite continues to be Denver’s “Sunshine” – it’s my favorite too!

My favorite music to play is anything that calms my 2 boys down! Something quiet and dreamy. But during the day, we love to dance to all kinds of upbeat music! I’d love to win this! Thanks!

My children’s music choice at bedtime is a mix cd of classical music and songs like ‘twinkle, twinkle little star.’ It has been played so many times, that I am actually surprised it still works! ;)

  • Karla

My kids favorite bedtime music is Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star…they won’t go to sleep without hearing it! Sometimes we like to change the words and make up silly ones. Bob Marley would be a fun change!
