Music Review: Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden CD/DVD

Near the end of my 5th pregnancy in the summer of 2007, I was having a tough time physically.  I was technically on bed rest, but laying down all day meant that I sometimes couldn’t sleep at night.  I remember the wee hours of one particular night when, while flipping channels, I landed on a Michael Bublé concert on PBS.  I had been a lukewarm fan of his music, but after watching his brilliant live performance, and seeing how charming he was – and such an “entertainer” as well! – I really fell in love.

I was truly pleased when Warner Bros Records offered me the chance to review Bublé’s most recent concert, the new CD/DVD release of Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden.

From the promotional material:

Following his first #1 Pop album and his third platinum-plus disc, 2007′s Grammy® winning Call Me Irresponsible, singing sensation Michael Bublé returns to the stage with the live CD+DVD package Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden. Featuring powerful performances of his hits ‘Everything,’ ‘Home’ and ‘Feeling Good,’ he brings the December 2008 concert at one of the most famous venues in entertainment history home to fans with Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden.

I found the DVD delightful.  You should know, however, that this is NOT a full recording of the concert itself.  It’s more of a reflective piece, following Bublé as he preps for the show and ruminates on the many years of hard work that have brought him to this pinnacle of his career.  There are a handful of performances scattered through the 60 minutes of video.  The CD contains live performances of several of Bublé’s great hits, as well as some fabulous jazz standards.

My favorite live concert I’ve ever seen was back in March when my husband and I went with 2 bus loads of people from our church to the Rock and Worship Roadshow where we saw Jeremy Camp, MercyMe, 10th Avenue North and Hawk Nelson perform. It was awesome to worship with thousands of other people all in one place. It is something I’ll never forget, for sure.

If I can choose from a live concert OR show…I’ll have to say Cirque de Soleil. AMAZING! I’ve seen both a traveling show and a non-traveling show – the ones that don’t travel are SO much better simply because they can rig up the place so uniquely. I loved the live music, and the performances were enthralling, yet still appealed to adults (no kiddie circus, here!).
