Children’s Book Review: Max Spaniel, Dinosaur Hunt, by David Catrow

My nearly 2yo son Eli has become fascinated with books.  So much so that we rarely have a problem with naptime and bedtime anymore, because he knows both will be preceeded by several stories, usually read to him by his 11yo sister.  It’s so fun to watch him obssess over a certain page, poring over each detail and sometimes even pointing and telling his own version of the story in toddler-speak.

Max Spaniel: Dinosaur HuntBecause of his newfound love of books, I was excited to get the chance to review the first in a new children’s book series about Max Spaniel, plucky dog extraordinaire.  In the book we reviewed, Max Spaniel:  Dinosaur Hunt (Orchard Books/Scholastic), Max sets out on an adventure seeking evidence of dinosaurs in his backyard.  The illustrations are fabulous, no doubt because that is author David Catrow‘s specialty, having illustrated a number of the other children’s books, including the ALA Notable Children’s Book for Young Readers, I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More!.  The text in this book for beginning readers is also very clear and straightforward.  I can easily see my son being able to repeat the simple words on his own after several readings of this book.  And I love the whimsy of the story as Max looks at everyday objects in an imaginative new light.

The only adventurous dog would be the one next door. It looks like a small ball of fur. I came home from work and found him out in the street licking up water. He blended in so well with the street that I was surprised that no one had hit him. I ended up keeping him until the family next door came home.
