The Strangest Alphabet

Sunday morning we sat for breakfast in the Platinum lounge of a full service Marriott in Mobile, Alabama.  We looked out of place with our road-weary faces and shabby clothes, but we didn’t care much.  We also didn’t care much about what it took to make our 2yo happy while waiting on the incredibly s.l.o.w. service.

The hostess had given us a coloring placemat and crayons for Eli, and as my husband and I began to interact with him over the letters and puzzles on the page, we noticed the strangest alphabet we had ever seen.  In our dizzy fatigue, we found the oddball illustrations hilarious, and both of us were in tears over a few of them.

See if you can help us figure them out.

The alphabet began innocently enough with A-armadillo, B-boat, C-clown, and so on.  Our first indication that something was amiss came at I, followed quickly by J and M.

I is for ?? And what the heck is J?! Is M a monster? 'cause that's really freaky.

Not to be outdone, N came in as a mystery, as did O and Q.

N and Q make sense if this is a SPANISH alphabet, but what the heck is O??

We finished out the alphabet with some standard animals – Rhino, Seal, Tiger – and a somewhat odd choice for V – volcano.

But WHAT ON EARTH IS Y???  By this time we were hooting and hollering, we thought it was so randomly funny.  This is honestly the strangest alphabet I’ve ever seen!

Y Alpha

That is crazy funny! N I think is nectarine? I think you’re right it’s gotta be a Spanish alphabet thing. Now I want to look up Spanish words for snake and axe/hatchet? J is pretty interesting too.

This is hilarious! And confusing. My daughter is 4 and getting better about knowing what words start with what letter. This would completely mess her up!

This is absolutely hysterical!! It must be some other language. I just can’t see J being anything but a yo-yo. I looked up the Spanish word for ax, and it is hacha, so I don’t know what the deal is with that. I could be a hot dog on a stick…not a corn dog, but just a hot dog…okay, I have no idea!! I would have laughed til I cried!!
