Children’s Book Review: Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again

I was recently sent a new book from Scholastic Press, Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again, for review. This book made. me. CRY.

Winter's Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again (Scholastic Press)

Winter is an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin who was found tangled and injured in crab traps off the east coast of Florida. Her injuries were so severe that she ended up losing her tail, a critical physical feature dolphins depend on to swim. She was taken to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where trainers, researchers, and eventually prosthetic engineers came together to help this dolphin whose indomitable spirit encouraged and inspired them all.

The story of Winter’s trial and ultimate triumph is told with great detail and heart, and shows how Winter’s perseverance affected adults and children all over the world. Now that my family has enjoyed this story, we’ll be donating the review copy to our elementary school’s library so more children can learn from Winter and those who helped her overcome.

TEACHERS, HOMESCHOOLERS, PARENTS:  On October 7, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium will be broadcasting a “Meet Winter” Virtual Field Trip LIVE from Florida from 1pm – 1:45pm EST.  Visit the Scholastic Website for more information on viewing, as well as how to access related age-appropriate activities for your students and children!

My father has inspired me to try and live the life I really want….He had severe skin cancer and tried so hard to beat it, I have never seen anyone as sick as he got, I never thought it was possible! He didn’t end up beating the cancer, but his fight did enable the doctors to learn quite a bit so hopefully that can be put to use for someone else. His illness taught me that I am stronger than I ever thought!

My mom has inspired me. We lost our dad, shortly thereafter my older sister. They both lived with Mom, then she was alone. She managed to get up every day and she keeps going on while my other sisters and I struggled, she set an example for us. (oh boy, tears).
