Because Rambling About Life Just Isn’t Enough…

…now I’ve got to go and start rambling about FOOD!

My Facebook followers have probably noticed (and perhaps been annoyed by?) the increase in food-related updates lately.  At the beginning of the year I decided to start committing to a weekly menu plan, which has led to a weekly grocery list, which in turn has led to better budgeting (and has reduced the likelihood of us eating out because no one knows what’s for dinner).  I’ve also incorporated my desire to start teaching my kids basic cooking skills by posting a “Help Mom Fix a Meal” chart on the refrigerator every week.  They each have to sign up for one meal, and then act as my Sous Chef (or dish washer, or counter wiper, or whatever!) during that evening.

By just opening myself up to this process, I’m *amazed* at what I’ve learned, and what I’ve been able to accomplish.  Spice aisles no longer look the same to me.  I notice recipes in magazines now.  When my husband suggested we have tacos for dinner on his birthday, my gut reaction was to say, “But that’s so ORDINARY!”  Instead, I made him gourmet bleu cheese hamburgers.

I am by no means becoming an expert at any of this, but cooking has become something I enjoy and think about in a much different light.  Since I already love to express my thoughts through blogging, I decided to start a cooking blog to share recipes I’ve found, as well as the adventures I have in the kitchen while muddling through things.

It’s still very much in it’s infancy, but if you’d like to check it out, click on the banner below:

Isn’t it amazing how having a plan makes things seem to much more manageable? There are still days when I don’t want to cook what I have planned, but knowing that I planned it and that I have the ingredients and have already spent the money most of the time keeps me on track.

I have started a monthly menu planning deal and it is saving us around $200 a month! It’s amazing how much gets added on to a weekly Walmart shopping trip that I don’t get if I only go seriously once a month. The rest of the time, I only go once a week for milk, bread, yogurt and produce. I LOVE it!
