Cheerios has been a staple in our house for many years. Breakfast, lunch, dinner – doesn’t matter, it’s a cereal we love to eat any time of day. We’ve often used Cheerios as one of the “first foods” for our babies, and our toddlers have usually had a bag closeby for snacktime. It’s hard to improve upon a classic (though we love our Honey Nut Cheerios as well!), but when the folks at MyBlogSpark offered to send us a box of Chocolate Cheerios to try, I thought we’d give it a whirl.
From the General Mills site for Chocolate Cheerios: Chocolate Cheerios is made with whole grain, real cocoa, has 100 calories per serving, is low in fat, and has 9 grams of sugar per serving. My kids really enjoyed them, saying they weren’t too sweet on the first bowl, but admitted that they probably wouldn’t have a second (like they might with regular Cheerios). “One bowl is good enough,” my 11yo daughter told me, clarifying that it might be sugar overkill to have seconds.
What I found that I liked more than having the Chocolate Cheerios for breakfast was having them handy as a tasty mid-morning snack. My 2yo loves to eat fruit snacks, but only one small packet (with maybe 10 “snacks” in the brand we buy) is 100 calories in itself. With Chocolate Cheerios, I could give him a full cup (which went a lot farther for him!) for just about the same amount of calories – AND he was getting some whole grains in there as well. I’m not saying these would totally replace offering him a banana or a piece of cheese, but it’s a decent option to have.
