Before my trip to visit eBay headquarters last week, I had to sign a Mutual Non-Disclosure Agreement. (note: I wonder what was so “mutual” about it? Maybe if I promised not to divulge trade secrets they would promise not to comment on how many bacon-wrapped scallops I ate at Monday evening’s reception? I dunno.) Because of the agreement, I wasn’t able to let you in on some really cool stuff eBay had cooked up for their online classifieds site, like:
But see, now I CAN tell you all those things, because eBay has made those announcements themselves, putting me in the clear to chat them up.
Another thing they recently announced – though they didn’t tell us about it at the event – was the rebranding of the site itself, from Kijiji to eBay Classifieds.
The move makes loads of sense. It leverages the eBay name, which has become a brand known for trust and safety. It brings the online classifieds site into a tighter integration with the eBay company as a whole.
My only complaint is that for a week now I have been telling my friends and family about Kijiji, spelling it out OVER and OVER, explaining the meaning of the word, and reassuring people that no, I didn’t just sneeze, I’m really trying to tell you something here. I had the logo splashed on my site, and a tear-jerker of a love letter declaring my affection for Kijiji.
Selfishness aside, I’ve changed everything I needed to on the blog and have started reporting back to friends and family, “Remember that website name you thought was so goofy?….” So, I guess it’s all worked out.
