We all know how inquisitive little kids can be, and I love finding books that present facts from the real world in fun ways. The only problem with many I’ve found, though, is that they are either too big and lose the kids’ interest, or they’re too complicated and my kids miss the point.
That’s why we’ve really enjoyed two books that Kingfisher (distributed by Macmillan) sent us a while ago: The Book of…Why? and The Book of…How? Both books are a nice square shape for little hands, have just 54 pages each, ask fun, straight-to-the point questions, and keep things simple. The illustrations are also lively and colorful. In addition to answering 50 questions each book, there are also “Did You Know” facts on each page. At the end of each book is a quick quiz (with answers provided afterwards) as well as a glossary to help with tricky words.
Other books in the series include The Book of What? and The Book of Who?. The books are ideally aimed at kids ages 5-8, but I have to say that my 9yo son has enjoyed them the most. An example of a question (and answer!) from The Book of How?:
How can you tell a horse’s age? Horses mainly eat grass, and munching away at this tough plant food is very hard on teeth. Experts can get a good idea of a horse’s age by looking at the way its teeth are wearing as it gets older.
Your kids will certainly learn something fun from these books, and you might learn a little something in the process, too!
*Disclosure: we were sent these books by Kingfisher for review. No other compensation was received. The opinions expressed are honest and our own. In fact, my son has had them at school for so long, he enjoys them that much (and loved sharing them with his classmates). Cleaning out his backpack, I rediscovered them and wanted to share them with you!
