Feed Me Books Friday: Dr. Seuss!

 Photobucket

(for more Feed Me Books Friday posts, visit The Adventure of Motherhood)

There are 6.5 years between our two youngest children, and sometimes that age gap corresponds with a memory gap for me.  I forget what works best at different ages and stages, and when I “rediscover” tips and tricks, I’m astounded I forgot them in the first place.

We read our 2yo son dozens of stories a day, and it wasn’t until this week that I realized we hadn’t brought any of our Dr Seuss books down from the shelves.  HOW could I forget Dr Seuss?!  Ever since we cracked open The Foot Book and our Six by Seuss compilation, my son has been entranced with the rhythms, the language, and the pictures.  And I have had great fun rediscovering the stories myself!  Favorites this week have included Yertle the Turtle, Horton Hatches the Egg, and The Lorax.

As a side note, with stories like Yertle the Turtle and The Lorax, Theodore Geisel (Dr Seuss, of course), wrote more than just children’s stories; he wrote social commentaries and books aimed at teaching children to be better citizens of the world.  I love coming across articles and research about the political side of Dr Seuss, because although my kids have only ever enjoyed the magical worlds of his creation, I’ve always enjoyed the underlying spirit and conscience of what he wrote.

And as a final side note (a pps, I guess!), have you ever heard of or seen Seussical the Musical?  Love it!  And my older kids love it as well.  Very family friendly and cleverly done – if your kids love Dr Seuss, it’s worth checking out.

My kids loved Dr. Seuss books when they were little. Their favorites were the Foot book and the Sleep book. I used Lorax to do a lesson with them once and it was a great book to use. I love your quote: “and sometimes that age gap corresponds with a memory gap for me.” I’ve suffered that same memory gap, as I’m sure many moms do. Great post!
