David Used More Than a Sling and Some Faith to Slay Goliath

Recently in Sunday school we briefly discussed the story of David and Goliath, covering the well-known basics:  David little, Goliath big; David with only five rocks and a sling, Goliath with sword and armor; the Lord with faithful David, Philistine Goliath all on his own.

But there was one aspect of the story that caught my attention for the first time.  Yes, David was armed with five stones, a sling, and an enormous amount of faith and confidence, but he had one more important weapon in his arsenal:  experience.

When Saul expresses doubt at David’s ability to kill the giant, David reasons with him (1 Samuel 17:  34-36):

Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock;

And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth:  and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

They servant slew both the lion and the bear:  and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them

David may not have faced anything the likes of Goliath before, but he had experiences similar enough to build on.  I love that principle – that we live and learn, and can use those lessons to face bigger oppositions in our lives.

If there is ever a time that you are fearful or unsure, search through the moments of your life and find something that relates – if only a little – and let that bolster your confidence.  Every moment matters, every moment counts, if for nothing else than to help us meet the next challenge in life, and then the next.
