Have I Done Any Good in the World Today? {A Blog Hop}

Earlier this week, Lindsey from Mrs. Potts’ Thoughts (@lindopotts on Twitter) invited me to link-up to a new Blog Hop she’s introducing, called Have I Done Any Good in the World Today?

have i done any good in the world today

We should all recognize that the work we do within our homes or for our families is the greatest service we can render.  And yet, sometimes it’s easy to become isolated in serving our own needs and circumstances.  I sometimes get overwhelmed with the responsibilities and stresses, and the #1 fix for getting out of my own head is to do something for someone else.

That may still sound like a self-centered reason for service, but that’s kind of how it works.  We do for others because they need it, but also because it helps us feel something:  useful, valued, warm, fuzzy, whatever.  Basically, service rocks.

Last Friday I was given an opportunity through my blog to do good for another.  You may remember that last Tuesday was Office’s Max huge A Day Made Better celebration, and I got to help present a local teacher with $1000 in school supplies.  Well, Office Max also gave me a $100 gift card to give to a teacher of my choice to help with classroom supplies.

It felt like a huge responsibility, and I didn’t want to decide on my own.  I approached the principals at my son’s elementary school, which has only been open 3 years and has a large parent population struggling with economic hardships.  This school is as good an example as any of the need for teachers to help supplement basic classroom supplies.

The principals decided to pull together a group of new teachers, and we drew from among their names to receive the $100 gift card.

Look at those smiles!  I recognize that it was me per se who served this school the most (that’s Office Max!), but it still felt like I was paying something forward to those who work so hard to educate my own children.  I loved being in a position to do something good for another.
