For many of us, summer means swimming pools and family reunions and lazy days with lots of choices. But for the 21.5 million kids who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, summer could mean a time of limited access to food and greater struggles with daily hunger.
ConAgra Foods has made fighting child hunger a part of its company mission and culture. In fact, for the past 20 years, ConAgra has partnered with Feeding America to ensure that programs addressing domestic hunger are necessarily funded, including a $10 million commitment to summer hunger support through the Hunger-Free Summer program.
Of the 21.5 million kids I mentioned who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, only 2.3 million participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Why the huge gap? ConAgra cites a variety of reasons:
ConAgra has come up with a few ways to address these challenges and create more access to food for needy children during the summer months.
We – you and me, together – can help by spreading the word about ConAgra’s Hunger-Free Summer program. Tell friends, families, teachers, and community leaders you know about this initiative to address domestic child hunger during the summer.
This summer, 29 food banks in 20 states will use Hunger-Free Summer grants – ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 – to overcome barriers. Find a food bank near you using the Feeding America Food Bank Locator.
Actor Chris O’Donnell has joined with ConAgra to bring awareness to the Hunger-Free Summer Program. Together, they have produced this video and every time it is viewed or shared, ConAgra will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America.
Could it be any simpler than that to donate a meal to a child in need this summer? I don’t think so! Just watch and share the video, and you’ll be helping donate to Feeding America.
