Earlier this month, I told you about the ConAgra Foods Hunger-Free Summer program for kids. More than 1 in 5 kids in America are food insecure, and many of those who rely heavily on free and reduced-price lunches during the school year fail to gain access to appropriate support services over the summer. ConAgra is working hard to serve these children, and Hunger-Free Summer is just one way they are doing that.
While I shared news about Hunger-Free Summer, I didn’t explain why it’s an issue that hits so close to home for me.
My husband and I married young and began our family right away. We both knew that our education was a *must* for future security, so even while having and raising young children, we both went to school and worked odd hours (usually late at night and/or early mornings) to help make ends meet.
During those early years, we relied on services like WIC, food stamps, and the Oregon Food Bank to help supplement our supply of food at home. Times were very lean for us, and although there was some embarrassment at needing the help, we knew we would be using the services for their best intent – to help see us through until we could become fully self-sufficient.
Talking with my kids now about the issue of child hunger, I think they understand something unique because of our own experiences – they understand that you can never tell who needs help. It isn’t as removed as the child in the commercial on tv – it could be as close as the friend sitting next to you in class. And they understand that everyone who is food insecure has different reasons for their need, and that none of those reasons matter more than getting children the help and hope they need.
You may not have a personal experience that brings the issue of child hunger close to home, but my guess is that you would still do anything you could to help kids in need. Thankfully, ConAgra Foods has made it incredibly simple to help!
Actor Chris O’Donnell has joined with ConAgra to bring awareness to the Hunger-Free Summer Program. Together, they have produced this video and every time it is viewed or shared, ConAgra will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America.
Could it be any simpler than that to donate a meal to a child in need this summer? I don’t think so! Just watch and share the video, and you’ll be helping donate to Feeding America.
